The McSwain Story

Brothers Working Together…

The beginning of the McSwain Carpets story is found in the spirit of cooperation between two brothers. Since the age of twelve, Ron McSwain worked at his older brother Ralph’s flooring company, eventually paying for his college education by installing hardwood for Ralph’s customers. Both of them learned their skills from their father and grandfather who operated small hardwood flooring businesses from their homes. One of the principles passed to them by their elders was to conduct business with “service you can trust.”

In the mid 1960s Ron formally joined Ralph’s business, McSwain Hardwood Floor Co. The business thrived as they crafted beautiful hardwood floors at lower prices and treated builders and homeowners with integrity.

On July 18, 1969, the brothers incorporated a brand new division of McSwain Hardwood Floor Co. that would soon become a true family tradition: McSwain Carpets. It was started with a single purpose — to provide outstanding service and quality workmanship in carpeting to the builders and homeowners of Cincinnati.

The Business Expands…
The new business grew rapidly and in 1974 Ron bought his brother’s interest in McSwain Carpets. The business continued to grow, doubling in size every three years. McSwain Carpets moved to Blue Ash in 1981 and opened its first Columbus store in 1980.

During that same year, McSwain Carpets received “The Flooring Award,” one of the highest honors in the floorcovering industry. McSwain Carpets opened its first Dayton store in 1986, and watched as an unwavering zeal for customer service created a winning reputation.

In 1988, Ron received the Chamber of Commerce’s “Small Business Person of the Year” award, and our company won the “Crescendo Award,” an award given to the 50 fastest growing companies in Cincinnati.

In 1991, McSwain Carpets became affiliated with CarpetMax and the International Marketing Group. McSwain Carpets built three new locations, and its sales exceeded the 30 million dollar mark.
